And then, as you are on the very verge of once again deciding "No, this game is bad for me", one of those ninety-minute epic games crops up where you end up with 3v3 and somehow still manage to win in spite of their Razor having three Divine Rapiers and two Aegis. I'm hooked. Helpless. Hopeless.

OK, I've followed this thread since it was created, tried doing various Google searches, and stretched the expanses of my nerd-dom, but what the hell is DoTA?

All I've found is this:

What is DotA? (Defense of the Ancients)
The first thing to remember about DotA is that it is a map, not a game. DotA runs off the Warcraft III engine, which is produced and maintained by Blizzard Entertainment.
I'm not going to go into the elaborate history of DotA and where is came from, but the current map developer is "IceFrog".
DotA is not a single-player game and is designed to be played by 2 teams of 5 players each. As such, DotA is often played on the internet, as well as at your local LAN venue.

This to me doesn't sound like a whole lot. Can someone go further into the appeal of this? Is it just 1 map that people play over and over?
1f u c4n r34d this u probably remember what my sig used to be and are missing it as much as I am :(

We play allstars by the way but it is similar to the original in basic gameplay mechanics

You play on a map like this in teams of 5 each, where you control one hero. Units for both teams spawn and move down the three paths, where they meet with the other team's units and fight. Along the paths are defensive buildings to stop them from reaching the enemy's base. Using normal game rules the team whose base falls first loses. Without any player's support, the game is just a standstill; you are needed to break this with your firepower. Expert micromanagement of your hero is key, as if your hero dies, you lose money, which goes to your assassin. Money is used to buy items which augment your hero in many different ways.

I think some of the huge draws to this map is the large amount of heroes and items to purchase -- think 79 different heros (With nearly all of them having completely unique skill sets), with about 10 different item shops, which equals pretty much a different game experience each time!

It has a large learning curve (which you may have already guessed)as well as lots of patience (In the beginning, you will suck horribly with strong feelings of dumbfoundedness). Its definitely a game you want to learn with others teaching you. We generally play on TS every night, however.. there has been a severe damper on ts dota recently... well a severe damper on people count on ts overall, which I would partially blame on school.

EDIT: nice post FEYD :D Incredibly corny, but some of the scenery was nice

DotA is extremely complicated, and has a steep learning curve... but is sooo worth it. Very rich gameplay, rediculous amounts of replay value.

Oh, and the song is *hilarious* ....

And St0nking.... welcome to electronic music... it's not just that one song that's like that :P

WOE!

Woe is Florp... for all the DotA players have vanished, leaving him out in the cold, shivering like an early ice age mammalian ancestor.

How Florp yearns for the hell-fires of Lucifer and the macropyres of Jakiro...

Hop on Darwin's vent and have a game!
