Old School Turn Based Goodness

Postby The Nighthawk » Fri Jan 26, 2007 8:20 am

I speak of course, of the liscenced Star Trek game Birth of the Federation. A fantastic little turn based spacefaring strategy game that is pretty balanced, and if it wasn't for the odd crash that inevitibly happens, would still be totally playable 8 years after its creation.

If anyone is interested in playing, you can go here, register, and download an iso of the original game, then grab the patch, and you're up and running. The game plays multiplayer as well of course, but only on a lan. Have no fear! I have just discovered a tool that lets you create a secure virtual lan over the internets!

Hamachi is a small little program that does exactly what it says it will do, create secure networks over the internet that can, among other things, allow you to play lan games with your friends over the internet! So now you can all drag out your old lan favorites, and connect with your buddies no matter where they are.

It's time for some old school gaming. :D

GET THEE BACK TO WRITIN'!!
God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.

This looks cool! I actually started watching Voyager every once in a while to satiate my annual Star Trek itch (I think it's some sort of Klingon rash).

I'll definitely play this.

If you end up watching Voyager I suspect your rash is some manner of pustulant, creeping, spurting cancerous mass.

Maybe I have very low standards, but those graphics don't look 1/2 bad!

I have created a Hamachi network named OldF (capital's count), with the same password. Log in to meet Fogies (and friends) for lan gaming goodness. Just remember to quit the network before closing Hamachi, otherwise your spot stays reserved to you, and a network can only support 16 people at a time.

And to Owleh, the graphics in the combat portion of the game are not bad at all. A little old, but not really an eyesore either.

I played this game, back in the day in fact I might own/owned it but lord knows where it is now, I'll get the download going and see if I can still stomach it.

Which patch is the OldF group standardizing on? This one?

Windows 2000/XP Fix English Version
It fixes all Xp errors. Updates your BotF 1.0.0 version to 1.0.2

Donuts! Indeed. :D

The post was two fold, first to share what I'm playing right now, but two, to introduce hamachi to the Folgies so others could share their old school games of choice. If anyone actually wanted to play BotF, well, that was just a bonus. :)

Pardon me while I have a WTF??? moment. One of the random events within the first 250 turns is the borg coming out of nowhere and pwning your culture? Sigh.

Lol, depending on wha tech level you start at it's either a great feature of the game, or a game killer. I'm assuming you started on a lower tech and it was a game killer? If you have a saved game from before them showing up, you can just restart it and turn the random events off.
