Opine on a new i7 system?

Postby Feyd Rautha » Tue Jul 14, 2009 4:33 pm

EDIT: oh well, bbcode for tables doesn't work. I worked this out a couple months ago, so prices probably have dropped. Has anyone built an i7 lately that they have recommendations for?

New Egg wishlist post

I've been sitting and waiting on pulling the trigger. I sat too long and the gtx 285s are now out of stock, so I put the 275 superclocks in there instead, which are about the same.

That is almost exactly what I am planning on building - I just had a different board - ASUS P6T X58. I have the nine hundred case but nothing else yet. I am always unsure of how much power I need - how big of a PS? I am looking at Silverstone.

I'm thinking about getting the zalman cooler rather than the v8 now. I'll probably get two video cards for SLI and bump the 6g to 12g since the board has 6 slots at 2G each.

For the power supply I think I was picking the best efficiency rating for the power. When I was looking only bronze level supplies would supply enough power for SLI type setups.

Brung a tear to my eye. You'll love that Nine Hundred case.

Well I subbed a ATI 5870 end the end. Had a terrible time finding one, however one is all you need. I have never seen 227 fps on any game, let alone tf2.

That's great and all, but does it run Crysis?

aww man I'm only getting 177 fps in TF2. Of course that's at 1900x1200 with 4xAA and all the other bells and whistles turned on ;)

You know, I JUST bought (in the mail) a HD4770 (runs cool), and I'm already behind the curve. ARGLE! BARGLE!

Go go go Nite!

If you can, and are still in the returns period, I'd recommend swapping that card for an HD5770. A much better card IMHO. Should be about as powerful as the last-gen's highends.

Oh, I'd totally do that, if it wasn't for it being double the cost of my HD 4770 :P

And if you look at this, you can see the bump in performance from my old to new card is pretty darn well good enough for me :)

Ah.. well I didn't check Canadian prices :\

TMSC is having some issues on their 40nm nodes.. which is pretty annoying since the process is about a year old now, and should be established. I don't think these issues will be fixed until next year from what I hear in the industry. It affects both ATi as well as nVidia... but we all know that nVidia has fallen by the wayside in terms of R&D... they're still rebranding old cards to try to pretend they are current. I don't think the new nVidia Fermi cards are going to be much better than the current ATi 5xxx series... but they're not going to be able to push out decent numbers until 10Q2 anyway. By then ATi would have had a refresh on the 5xxx series. ATi sure has a huge leg up this round in the GPU wars!
