Engine test releases tomorrow for all pre-orders

Postby Beasty » Thu Apr 08, 2010 9:06 pm

I'm not really "excited" for this, but I'm interested to see how it performs and looks. From the lit mode in the editor the graphic quality is quite amazing. Should be fun to walk around a level and shoot at random stuff, but first I have to get through a 9 hour day of work! :rolleyes: and then hope they still have bandwidth left over so I can find a torrent file because their servers are going to be ridiculous.

WTF is an 'engine test'?
God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of his own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.

Charlie's going to put up the core game engine (graphics, controls) so he can find out whether it actually runs on different machines. Indie developers don't have the luxury of a QA lab with a hojillion different graphics cards etc, so it's very useful to the Unknown Worlds team to find out if the graphics only render large black triangles and nothing else on the Radeon z31435532uajg523-35252.
Obligatory blog link.

Get to walk around and shoot targets. Apparently it'll be multiplayer! Like a giant readyroom or something...

Once you've finished running around you have to open up the viewer.exe file under "%INSTALL_DIR%/Natural Selection 2/viewer.exe" and view some of the models. My favorite is the marine, jetpack animation.

I've just been reading through the lua code, they have a lot of defined varibles in the 'balance.lua' file.

My favorite bit of code so far:
// Player weights
kHumanMass = 90.7 // ~200 pounds (incl. armor, weapons)
kSkulkMass = 45 // ~100 pounds
kGorgeMass = 80 // Fatty
kLerkMass = 54 // ~120 pounds
kFadeMass = 158 // ~350 pounds
kOnosMass = 453 // Half a ton

The torrent is the way to go, there are over 800 seeds right now.

Oh and when I went to retrieve my key from my email archive, I pre-ordered on May 19, 2009? What the heck are we hard core for this game or what?

People are already create mods for the engine. Granted they are really quite simple but by the time NS2 comes out I'm sure there will be a few good mods floating around.
