TF2 Tweaks, Configs, Etc.

Postby Ni » Wed Nov 07, 2007 7:49 pm

Starting a list of guides re tweaking HL2/TF2 settings, configs, etc....

Config changes go here: <Steam Folder>\SteamApps\<account_name>\team fortress 2\tf\cfg\autoexec.cfg

Command line options (right click on TF2 in Steam's "My Games" menu > Click Properties > Launch Options):
    -dxlevel 81 (the Direct X level you are running the game, e.g. 70=7.0, 80=8.0, 81=8.1, 90=9.0)
-novid (gets rid of the startup videos (bald guy, valve logo)
-width / -height (the resolution you are running the game in)
-window (runs the game in a window instead of full screen)
    -heapsize 262144 (how much memory to allocate to TF2, e.g. if you have 512MB System Memory you might allocate 50% of it (262144), 1GB = 524288; 2GB = 1048576)
Example usage: -dxlevel 81 -novid -heapsize 1048576
Note: I'm seeing reports that you should only use the -dxlevel command once (to set it) and then remove it from your command line (probable cause of resetting resolution to 800x600 every time).

Fanx! HL2 runs nice for me but Portals runs like a midget with broken legs so this'll be helpful.

This has helped increase my TF2 FPS to acceptable levels. Thank you! Now that I have decent FPS, I can play with a semblance of skill. In case anyone cares, here's my config:

I should warn you it doesn't look very good compared to an untouched game, but it sure runs better.

I've made my own crosshairs, for anyone who doesn't like the defaults. They're a nice, simple, red dot instead of the, in my opinon, unnecessarily elaborate crosshairs for just about all of the weapons. Now, they render a little fuzzy around the edges, but it seems to be an effect of having custom crosshairs. I downloaded a bunch from the net and tried them all out, to the same end. They're still easily visible though.

To use these, go into your TF2 folder, find the 'tf' folder, then, inside 'materials' create a folder called 'sprites' and put this file inside. The path should look like C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\yourusernameoremail\team fortress 2\tf\materials\sprites\crosshairs.vtf

Download: http://senduit.com/3a2eac

Happy fragging!

edit: changed crosshairs from red to white with red border for visibility.
edit2: upon further testing, it appears that Source doesn't care that I wanted nice little dot crosshairs. Even though they're dots in the file, they've more or less adopted their previous incarnations with different colours in-game. Lame.

I had a friend try loading this config this is what I told him to do.

1. create a new config ie. userconfig.cfg place in folder: ?:\Steam\SteamApps\account@email.com\team fortress 2\tf\cfg

2. open config.cfg and add: exec userconfig.cfg

I had him manually exec the file in his console and he gets something like

userconfig.cfg could not exec

any ideas?

Files not in the correct directory? Not sure. Maybe there's something wrong with the formatting.

Create an autoexec.cfg in your /cfg/ folder. I believe config.cfg is overwritten everytime you quit the game.

I found some additional settings that have drastically improved my FPS (From 30s to 90s)

Code: Select all
r_threaded_renderables "1" // default 0
mat_queue_mode "2" // default -1
r_threaded_particles "1" // default 1
r_threaded_client_shadow_manager "1" // default 0
cl_threaded_bone_setup "1" // default 0
cl_threaded_client_leaf_system "1" // default 0

mat_queue_mode "2" in particular gives huge performance gains, as long as you're using an Intel C2D. Some people have also reported instabilities with it. To get these to work, stick them in autoexec.cfg. Some people have also suggested using the -heapsize launch option.

I've been trying to get a white cross bordered by black for my xhairs, but .vtf is dumb and treats black as transparency. I'm sure there's some way to export into a .vtf and keep black as a solid color, but I haven't been able to find out what it is. Supposedly, if you raise your texture level to "High", crosshairs become less blurry. Anyways, yeah, I'm sort of playing TF2 a little now - I actually don't have Orange Box, I just have a friend with it who lets me access it.

Bitte helfen sie mir!!

Alright so I had system meltdown earlier this week and have been struggling to put ol' compy back on her feet.

I've got TF2 reinstalled but it stinks of shite! My FPS is in the red and I can't figure out why. I've got the settings down low, the latest drivers (newer than the pre-crash ones, which might be the problem) with the settings notched down, and I even created and autoexec with Amnizu's settings but my FPS is still way lower than it was before.

The autoexec helped but it took away the gun models, which was weird, and didn't really improve performance much. Can we troubleshoot?

Uh, is GameOverlayUI.exe asking for permission from the firewall constantly? I find it does that after an update, and I have to reallow the bloody thing. If I don't, say GOODBYE to FPS.

No, nothing like that. I let go of the autoexec and tweaked the resolution a bit and that seemed to get it to playable levels but the thing is that the game seems to be trying to make itself look too good (bloomin' show off). So whereas before the models had a very soft, matted look (my wife is a graphic designer and I don't know the technical terms :| ) it's all shiny now...lots of shiny bits in there. Here...

Note the shine. Suggestions?

Set the dxlevel to 8.1? I think the flag in your Launch Properties is -dxlevel 81
